Our region's 4th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee contest for Middle School students in the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego (DCMO) BOCES region is underway. Olivia Powell from Oxford Academy and Central School represented the region two years in a row--2004 & 2005. Olivia is now a High School student, so it's time for someone else to take her place.
In-school Spelling Bee contests will be held at each of the 32 participating middle schools between November and January 30th, to determine a winner who will represent their district at the regional contest in Oneonta.
The Daily Star's Regional Spelling Bee contest will be held at SUNY Oneonta's Goodrich Theatre, on Saturday, March 4th, 2006, 10:00 AM.
The regional winner and a chaperone will receive an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. from May 31st - June 2nd, 2006, to participate in the National Spelling Bee contest. The Daily Star in Oneonta is the key sponsor of the regional bee and is picking up the expenses for the winner and a chaperone to participate in the national bee in Washington, DC on May 31 - June 2.
The 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee is the 79th annual event for the spelling competition, making it the longest-running educational promotion. Over 230 newspapers across the country work with the Scripps Bee to crown a national spelling champion.
So Middle Schoolers, get out those dictionaries and start studying!;)
