Oxford Academy's 2nd annual
Academic Challenge Tournament
OXFORD - The 2nd annual Oxford Academic Challenge Tournament was held at the Oxford Academy High School, Saturday, February 11th, from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM. The five high school teams competing were: the Oxford Academy “Blackhawks”, the Whitney Point “Eagles”, the Cooperstown “Redskins”, the Greene “Trojans”, and Seton Catholic “Saints” of Binghamton.
The high school teams competed in an exciting Jeopardy-like competition. Players were asked questions from the areas of mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, the fine arts, foreign language, technology, and some trivia. The goal of the Oxford Academic Challenge Tournament is to provide a prestigious arena in which the area's academically talented high school students are recognized. Questions were read in four rooms by Mr. Mark Hine, Mrs. Marian Godfrey, Mr. John Godfrey, and Mrs. Kathleen Anderson.
The Blackhawks, entered two teams. Team 1 consisted of Jesse Bateman (the team’s captain), Orrin Kenyon, Jessica Petersen, and Olivia Powell. Oxford’s Team 2 consisted of Amanda Cole and Arik Nisbet, who shared captainship, Alyssha Everitt, and Geoffrey Sheldon. The Oxford coach is Mr. Roger Carey.
Whitney Point and Cooperstown also entered two teams each, making a total of eight teams, four students each, including Oxford’s two. Each team played five matches. Preliminary round match winners played for the championship, 3rd, 5th, and 7th places.
Winning the championship trophy was Whitney Point’s team 1; winning the Second Place plaque was Cooperstown’s team 1; and winning the Third Place plaque was Oxford’s team 1. :dance:Cooperstown-2 placed fourth; Seton Catholic, Fifth Place; Greene, Sixth Place; Whitney Point-2, Seventh Place; Oxford-2, Eighth Place.
Lunch was prepared by the Oxford Academy Multi-Cultural Club under the direction of Mrs. Maria Burcroff. They made French bread pizza, tacos, salad, soda and dessert.
