ARTISTIC DISCOVERY 2006
The annual Chenango County high school art show, Artistic Discovery 2006, opened at the Chenango County Council of the Arts, Mariea Brown & Raymond Loft Galleries at 27 West Main Street in Norwich tonight, Friday, March 31st, at 5:00 PM. The event is sponsored by Congressman Sherwood Boehlert, who donated Certificates and Medallions. A lovely reception was provided by Charlene Walling. Financial awards were provided from the Elizabeth and George Mead Foundation. Deb Whitman, the Art Council's Gallery Director and sculptor, presented the awards and introduced the juror, Lori Wilson of Golden Artist Colors, Inc.
Lori has been an Application Specialist at Golden Artist Colors for the past ten years where she conducts workshops and demonstrations to all age groups. Lori has her Masters degree in Art History from the University of Manchester, England, and a Bachelors degree in Studio Art and Art History from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY.
Of particular note:
Samantha McAvoy from Afton High School won first place for her pastel drawing titled, "Avenging Angel".
Brooke Tobey of Oxford Academy High School won two awards, a first and second place for her two oil paintings, "Sara" and "Remnants".
Abbie Fitzpatrick of Sherburne-Earlville had two second place awards for her pencil drawings "Self Portrait" and "Old Man".
There were six first place and second place awards for 2-D submissions.
1st place awards went to: Samantha McAvoy, Miranda Gehris, Ryan Marchant, Brooke Tobey, Adrian Enscoe, & Michael Bluy. 2nd place: Courtney Barnhart, Brooke Tobey, Abbie Fitzpatrick (2), Aurora Roe, & Kevin Russell.
Two awards were given to 3-D submissions. 1st place went to Carly Law of Norwich for her ceramic mask and 2nd place went to Sierra Ruff of Oxford for her giant Snicker's candy bar.
Under the art direction of Deborah Crossman, Oxford Academy High School had a number of entries become winners. Entries were from: Christi Baker, Courtney Barnhart, Emily Debrita, Alysa Law, Erin Law, Samantha MacLaury, Jessica Petersen, Sierra Ruff and Brooke Tobey. All entries received certificates from the office of Congressman Boehlert.
The first place winners will move on to a state competition being held at Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute in Utica. The winner of the state competition will have their work displayed at the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.
