Memorial Day Parade, 5-29, 9:30 AM
Oxford Memorial Day Parade is May 29th
The Memorial Day Parade will begin in Oxford at 9:30 AM and in McDonough at 11:00 AM.
Memorial Day has become the most important day of recognition of our armed forces. In Oxford, the American Legions Fort Hill Post will hold a ceremony at the Catholic Cemetery at 8:00 AM. Following that, at 9:00 AM, the parade will line up at the American Legion Post # 376, at 17 South Washington Avenue.
The parade, beginning at 9:30 AM, will be led by the Post # 376 Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion (SAL's), and the Auxiliary. It is with great pride that the NYS Veterans Home has become part of the parade by adding a bus with Resident Veterans. As always, the parade will feature the Oxford Academy and Central High School Marching Band, followed by Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H members.
A salute honoring those who died at sea will be given at the Main Street Bridge (that crosses over the Chenango River). This includes a wreath ceremony and rifle salute. The parade continues to the Riverview Cemetery with a ceremony and speeches honoring the memory of the departed and a rifle salute. Post Commander, Ray Krygier, will give a greeting and the call of the deceased will be read by the Post Chaplain, Al Gordon. Officiating clergy will be Pastor Norman Holtz, of the First Bible Church of Oxford. The Pledge of Allegiance and Gettysburg Address will be read by two of the American Legion Boys State Representatives. The principle address will be presented by Alan E. Gordon, Oxford Attorney and Chenango County Public Defender. The Oxford Academy and Central High School Marching Band will provide patriotic music under the direction of Jaclyn M. Viscardi and Thomas Bankert.
There will be a fund raising chicken BBQ at the Legion by the SAL at 11:00 AM at the South Washington Avenue Legion after the parade.
The Oxford Academy Marching Band will then go to McDonough to march in the Memorial Day Parade starting there at 11:00 AM.
