Poetry Competition 9/9
Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival 2006 To Hold
5th Annual Performance Poetry Competition
NORWICH - On Saturday, September 9, 2006, Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival will hold a competitive performance poetry slam in which poets of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience will compete for $500.00 in cash prizes. The event, organized and hosted by Richard Bernstein, Norwich poet and teacher, will take place at the Music Shop Pub, 26 South Broad Street, in Norwich, NY, and is sponsored through the generosity of Price Chopper Supermarkets, Meadwestvaco and OSG Norwich.
The Music Shop Pub is centrally located, audience and performer friendly, appropriately intimate, and accessible to all. Food and beverages will be on sale, and the bar will be open. Children under age 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The action will begin promptly at 12:00 noon with the youth division. Buddy Wakefield, two-time International Slam champion, will then perform. He has appeared on HBOs Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam and has headlined at poetry slam venues throughout the world. The open slam follows for poets of all ages and levels of experience. This years slam features many contestants from the National Poetry Slam, held August 9-12 in Austin, Texas, including members of Team Ithaca and Team Oneonta as well as nationally ranked collegiate slam poets.
Contestants are judged on the quality of their poetry as well as the quality of their performance. Contestants should prepare to read their original work in two three minute rounds, with the second round for finalists only. Poets will be penalized for going over three minutes. Scoring is open and immediate. The youth division allows no more than two poems per round, while the adult division permits only one poem in each round. Poets should not repeat poems. Neither musical accompaniment nor props are allowed.
This event is free and open to the public. There is no entry fee. To register, call 607-334-2422 or email rdld04@aldephia.net (rdld04@aldephia.net) by September 1. A limited number of spots are available.
Last year, more than 40 poets, from 14 to 90 years of age, participated in Colorscape Chenangos 4th Performance Poetry Competition. Of those, 11 poets who competed at Colorscape also appeared at the National Poetry Slam in 2005. Performance poetry continues to grow in popularity across the country and is a common occurrence on college campuses and in coffeehouses. Additionally, performance poetry airs regularly on HBO and is celebrated on Broadway. Come see what its all about at Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival 2006.
