Oxford Historical Society’s annual
Band Concert & Ice Cream Social
The Oxford Community Band's Summer Concert Series will be held Thursday, August 10th, at 7:00 PM at the Oxford Historical Society’s (OHS) Depot-Museum. All are welcome to share in this wonderful social event of the season. The band will set up outdoors, under the overhang of the authentic D. L. & W. railroad depot (built circa 1920) at 1 Depot Street, Oxford.
OHS President, Fred Lanfear anticipates being host to over 100 community members in attendance for this pleasurable hour of music. As is the tradition with this summer performance, it will be accompanied by delicious ice-cream, sold at the olde fashioned price of five cents a bowl. In addition, the History Museum’s door will be open for a special exhibit of items that survived the recent flood.
The Oxford Community Band of approximately 20+ volunteer musicians, ranging in age from school students to senior citizens, will play moderate grade marches, show tunes, overtures and novelty selections for the enjoyment of the Oxford community. This summer, the band has been directed by Jessica Freeman, but tonight, there will be a new guest conductor.
This concert performance will be conducted by Becky Sabine. Becky, an assistant music teacher at Sherburne and versatile musician, primarily plays trombone, and also has a beautiful singing voice. She plays trombone with the Oxford, Norwich, Smyrna and Oneonta community bands. Becky also plays with "Red Raville and His Big Band Sounds", the dance/jazz band.
Visiting Oxford Band alumnae are encouraged to make themselves known to the group or bring an instrument and sit in. As always, all performances are FREE of charge. For your own comfort, bring a blanket or folding chair and relax and enjoy the music and ice cream on the Depot’s lawn, and please be sure to give the talented guest conductor, Becky Sabine, a very warm welcome!
Traditionally, this has been the last concert of the series; however, one more performance has been added. On August 17th, 6:30 PM, the Oxford Community Band will play at the NYS Veterans’ Home.
