Legion Flag Ceremony Begins Football Season
Legion Holds Flag Ceremony at Blackhawk Stadium
Before the start of the Varsity Football game in Blackhawk Stadium against the Groton “Indians”, the Oxford American Legion conducted a “Flag Presentation Ceremony”. This patriotic ceremony, September 8th, was a grand way for the Oxford Academy and Central Schools Blackhawks to begin its football season.
The American Legion, Fort Hill Post #376, officers present for the ceremony were Commander and Honor Guard, Ray Krygier; 1st Vice Commander, Adam Everitt; Post Adjutant, John Sherman; post members, Bruce Wackford and Paul Estelow; and Audrey Krygier and Louise Wackford, of the Post #376 Auxiliary.
Representing Oxford Academy were Superintendent, Randy Squier; Director of Athletics (and Business Teacher), Jim “JT” Toner; and High School senior, Blackhawk #56, TE/LB, Willy MacGuire. Handling the PA system was David Hubman for the broadcast of the National Anthem and the “Pledge of Allegiance”.
In the opening statement of the Flag Presentation Ceremony, Commander Ray Krygier stated, “We are gathered here for an important patriotic and solemn purpose. To witness the presentation of the Flag of our country, “Old Glory” to the Oxford Academy and Central High School….” Next, Vice Commander Adam Everitt read “Your Flag and My Flag” a poem by Wilbur D. Nesbit. After a proper salute, the flag was passed from Commander to Vice Commander, then presented to Superintendent Randy Squier. The flag was slowly raised on the pole by Vice Commander Everitt, assisted by Squier, while the National Anthem played. The Honor Guard fired one shot as a salute to the Flag; all participated in the Pledge of Allegiance, which was led by Willy MacGuire; and then the game commenced.
