Midstatesmen to Sing in Oxford 9/27!
Midstatesmen Barbershop Chorus to Sing at
NYS Veterans’ Home & American Legion
The talented singers of the Midstatesmen Barbershop Chorus will be appearing at two Oxford locations on Wednesday, September 27th. At 6:30 PM, they will perform at the NYS Veterans’ Home on County Road 32. Then at 7:45 PM there will be an “Afterglow” event at the American Legion, at 17 South Washington Avenue, where they will sing as well.
This group of approximately one dozen gentlemen, who belong to an Oneonta SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America) chapter, will perform the traditional four-part harmony, a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment). In four-part harmony, the lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the deep bottom notes and the baritone completes the chord.
Joe Knoll, from Oxford, is a member of the group who sings bass and loves it. He said of being in the Chorus, “I wish I hadn’t waited until I retired to start singing--I enjoy it so much!”
Joe’s enthusiasm is echoed by all the members of the group. The Midstatesmen are dedicated to enrich lives in every generation and community through the lifelong benefits of a cappella harmony singing. They sing classic barbershop from the 1890s to 1920s and some doo-wop from the 50’s and 60’s. This one-hour performance is sure to please both residents and visitors alike, but the enjoyment won’t abruptly end there.
Around 7:45 PM, the Midstatesmen will keep the lingering joy of their harmonies going by performing at the Oxford American Legion, Fort Hill Post #376, for an “Afterglow” festivity in their honor. All are welcome.
The Midstatesmen are members of the Barbershop Harmony Society (Barbershop.org), a national association that began in 1938. Today, the organization has 30,000 members in more than 820 chapters in the United States and Canada. The Midstatesmen are always looking for new members and can be contacted thru Joe Knoll at (607) 843-9094.
For more performance info call the NYS Veterans' Home: (607) 843-3100 or the Oxford American Legion: (607) 843-8166.
