Great Oxford Craftspeople at Colorscape!
Oxford Craftspeople Looked Great at Colorscape!

At the 12th annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival in Norwich, September 9-10th, Oxford was well represented by its very talented artisans.
Norm Hall of NORM HALL TRADITIONALS, was there spinning wool on one of his custom-made spinning wheels. His portfolio of wheels was open for custom orders, and he had many drop spindles and bobbins made of very smooth cherry, walnut, and jatoba.
John Knapp of KNAPP KNOLL WOODWORKS had many beautiful articulated wooden toys like hippos, fish, and logging trucks of his own creation. He even had one special cherry wood chair fit for a prince or princess!
David Hayles and Angelique Bakalyar of BEAVER PALACE STUDIO had their "palace" set up with their ornamental pillars and pediments all in David's architectural, Scagliola. A giant scagliola urn filled with flowers served as a tremendous focal point if David's demonstrations didn't already draw in visitors. In addition to all of the plaster-like sculptures, Angelique had her fantastically whimsical fabric hats. Each headpiece was a one-of-a-kind, wearable art, "soft sculpture".
Audrey Johnson of AUDREY JOHNSON SEAT WEAVING demonstrated chair caning. She and one of her students were hard at work weaving a pair of chair seats. This old art will not be lost as long as Audrey passes it along. For those who'd rather have Audrey redo their chairs, she had a list of the many types of seat weaving she does such as: pressed cane, splint, daisy pattern, Shaker tape, natural rush, seven step, fibre splint and rush, and wide binding.
The Festival looked and sounded wonderful, and the Oxford craftspeople had booths filled beautiful creations. We are all very proud of you and hope all of you had an enjoyable and successful show!
