Presentation in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette at Big Moose Lake in the Adirondack Mountains in 1906. A $500 grant was awarded to GHS by the Chenango County Council of the Arts to finance this presentation. Free event.
October 10, 2006: The Annual GHS Dinner will be held at The Old Mill Restaurant in Mt. Upton at 6:00 pm. Cost $15. There will be five meal choices as follows: Chicken Old Mill, Honey Mustard Chicken, Ham, Crab Cakes, Coconut Shrimp. If you wish to attend, please contact Tom Gray by October 2 (tgray@mkl.com).
Historian’s Report: (Tom) Thursday, September 7, was the final GHS open house of the summer at the Klee House. The open houses held throughout the summer were very successful. GHS members who attended made significant strides indexing scrapbooks in the Society collection. Available indexes for scrapbooks in the GHS collection are being merged into a master index which will greatly facilitate use of this valuable resource.
Information has been received regarding Dave Rush who performs traditional songs of New York State. This is considered a good possibility for a future social. There is a charge for Mr. Rush to perform. This could possibly be covered by a grant from the Chenango County Council of the Arts.
The afghan sales promotion for the benefit of GHS has proven very successful. At present, less than 10 of the original 100 afghan’s purchased are still available for sale.
Bruce Everett of Washington D.C. has recently become GHS’ newest lifetime member.
A survey has recently been received from “The Place” in Norwich which provides activities for young people of the community. By filling out the survey, GHS may have an opportunity to involve some of the students who attend “The Place” to help on a GHS project.
Clara McLagen has donated an book to GHS of zipcodes from the early 1970s.
Sharon donated a half dozen school books for the Roots Corners Schoolhouse. The majority were published in the 1880s with one published in 1904, making them representative of what school children of that era would have studied from.
Archie Hubbard is planning to sell off the artifacts which at one time were part of the Guilford Museum exhibits. Current information is that the initial goal is to sell the entire lot for $10,000. If that is not achieved, an auction would be held in the spring.
BOCES: A couple of interesting hikes sponsored by the Chenango Land Trust include the O&W Railroad in the Smyrna area (Sept 23, 8:00-noon) and the Grace Brown tour of South Otselic (Oct 14, 8:00-noon). Grace was the victim in the sensational murder case upon which the novel An American Tragedy was based. There is a charge for these tours. Anyone who is interested in either event should call Chenango County BOCES in Norwich.
Float Committee: The GHS float received 2nd place at the Fireman’s Parade in Norwich this past month.
Building Project Committee: Pictures of the Dexheimer house at 116 Merchant St. were shared by new members Candy and Jim Sheffer.
Mary Ellen and Shirley have been working together to photograph all houses within the town limits (i.e., 90 houses). To date 63 have been photographed, with the expectation that the remaining houses will be completed this season.
Schoolhouse Committee: (Ken) Materials are now available to complete coating the roof of the schoolhouse. Upon inspection, some repair work to the roof was determined to be needed. Also some of the trees need to be trimmed back or removed. Ken has spoken with Randy Payne who previously helped with the Guilford Center Cemetery restoration project. He would charge $400-$500 to complete the work. Sufficient funds are available in the schoolhouse fund to cover this expense. It was agreed by the membership to hire Randy to complete this work.
Jim Carney has donated an additional $50 to the schoolhouse fund. Jim’s generous support of the schoolhouse project is very much appreciated by GHS.
Anyone who is interested in any of the officers’ positions should contact any member of the nominating committee.
Presentation: (John Warner) “A Relative of Guilford’s First Settler”--John Dibble is credited with being the first settler of Guilford.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm. Minutes submitted by Sharon Donahe
