Primary School Thinks “Green”!
The message of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!” came through loud and clear to students April 10th at a special Oxford Academy Primary School Morning Program. Primary School guest speaker, Patricia Pittsley, Waste Management Program Assistant, from the Chenango County DPW (http://www.co.chenango.ny.us/DPW/dpw.htm), presented a short educational program on recycling for an “Earth Day” theme.
Teacher, Mrs. Paula Williams, got the kids in the mood with a sing-along song called “Pick it Up” by Skip West, which is appropriately about picking up garbage. Mrs. Pittsley then gave the kids ideas of ways that they could save and reuse old containers, compost food scraps, and make their own individual servings instead of buying them. They were most amused finding out the carpet they were sitting on was made from recycled soda bottles! By the end of the program, everyone was thinking “green” thoughts to help keep the planet healthy.
After the program, Pat said that the recycling facility is now accepting plastic shopping bags! Also that Sept. 15th will be a HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY and an ELECTRONICS EQUIPMENT RECYCLING DAY. Come to the Highway Dept. on Rexford Street in Norwich. Household chemicals, lead based paints, pesticides and electronics equipment will be taken in free of charge. Participants will be limited to one computer system and one television per household. Mark down that date, as it will be your only chance in 2007 to do this for free!
