Oxford’s 14th annual Arbor Day Celebration
Oxford Village held its 14th annual “Tree City USA” Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, April 28th, which coincided with the Norwich Oxford Little League (NOLL) Opening Day parade. LaFayette Square was festooned with red and purple balloons to welcome the Little Leaguers of Norwich and Oxford, and green balloons decorated the bandstand where the tree give-away was held.
While the Little Leagues patiently waited to march, the honorable Oxford Village Mayor Terry M. Stark read the Arbor Day proclamation and then was presented awards by DEC Senior Forester, Greg Owens. Oxford Village Tree Board members Gray Stevens, Roger Monaco, Dale Johnson, John Godfrey, Janet Seehausen, and Jeanie Petersen were on hand. Oxford was named a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation and, this year, was also the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for going beyond the efforts of most Tree City municipalities.
Lynne Lightowler-Buck, of the Oxford Garden Club, presented the Oxford Tree Board with a donation for a special tree. As a surprise, it was revealed that the tree be dedicated to Janet Seehausen, a member of the Garden Club as well as the Tree Board. Janet was a former Mayor of Oxford and was credited with starting the Arbor Day celebrations in the village.
John Godfrey of the Tree Board presented the Oxford Academy 5th grade award winners of the 2007 regional Arbor Day poster contest with prize t-shirts. They were given to Erica Carr (3rd), Olivia Sylstra (2nd), and Matthew Moore (1st). Their posters, displayed with ribbons, and all the poster entries were on exhibit at 6 ON THE SQUARE.
Also on exhibit at 6 ON THE SQUARE were antique post cards. The Oxford Historical Society displayed a collection of photographs from post cards depicting “Tree Lined Oxford”, scenes of Oxford in 1908.
Hundreds of Fraser Fir, White Spruce, Scotch Pine, and White Cedar seedling trees, including some donated by the Chenango County Soil and Water Conservation District, were given away by Board members and Cub Scouts of Troop 65, as part of "Tree City USA" and the Arbor Day Celebration.
DJ Jim Baldwin (who graciously provided his sound system), kicked-off the NOLL parade with “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”, but really got the crowd going when he played “Who Let the Dogs Out!” The hundreds of Norwich-Oxford Little Leaguers began their march from the Great American parking lot to the elementary and high school baseball field for the Opening Day Ceremony and games. Mayor Stark and Roger Monaco threw out first balls.
A special thanks to the Clachan Coffee House for providing balloons, Chenango Welding Supply for providing helium, Rapid Reproductions, LLC for the poster printing, Creative Stamping for their Arbor Day bookmark craft, 6 ON THE SQUARE for providing exhibit space, and to P.O.N. member volunteers who decorated the Park.
