I cannot believe how many friends have called and e-mailed, thanking me for getting back with RAMBLING FEVER. You will please forgive me, if I miss an issue or two, but you cannot imagine how busy I find myself here "At the Home." If I could walk, it would cut my travel time in half, but my wheelchair is only two paces above the speed of a turtle. Then too, I get many visitors nearly every day, and you know me, I don't walk away from a good conversation. The main entrance, gift shop, and activities hall are all on one end of the building, and I am on the very extreme other end of the building.
We have an excellent gift shop in the front lobby, and I travel down to that very often. The volunteers that operate that, are all personal friends. The lady that supervises that knows I am a licorice person, and she does her best to find me different types. All the volunteers in the gift shop are great, and they know nearly everyone here in the Home by first name, kind of like the basis of the old home town A & P's and Victory stores. Kind-of a "home" touch.
It seems like nearly every day I meet someone from Oxford, or an acquaintance From Chenango county, like Greene, Norwich, Sidney, etc. My being active in the American Legion, Forty and Eight, and being a police officer for so many years has earned me a multitude of acquaintances and close friends. Many of them come in here each day to visit their friends and family members, and they stop in here, and or I meet them in the hall or lobby. Some people choose to seldom leave their rooms, except for meals or therapy. That is just not my cup of tea. If I were to do that, I believe I would go stark raving mad in a very short time.
The powers to be have allowed me to bring my camera and computer into my room, and when I am not out enjoying the sunshine and great outdoors, I am out taking pictures of the new construction and my friends. It is a bit of an expensive hobby, but I like it very much. It enables me to give pictures of my friends for their loved ones, and their smiles and thanks of gratitude are priceless.
I was asked again by a good friend if anything has been done by the Village, Town or County in the restoration of the Isaac Sherwood family cemetery, here on the north side of the Veteran's Home land? The answer is NO. I acquired the necessary paper work for the Georgetown Camp personnel to come in and cleanup the property, erect the memorial tombstones back in place, and pick up and install the wrought iron fence that once enclosed the property. This paperwork I personally delivered to the Village Office at Oxford two years ago. I have twice picked up brush and hand cut quite a bit of brush there, but a few people were quite concerned that I was doing this on my own, and may be injured. Now that I have stepped on a few toes, and perhaps become quite un-popular with a few souls, all I can say is, let's wait and see.
My personal congratulations to the powers to be that have initiated and started the "6 On The Square" in the Village of Oxford, and I wish them every success in the venture. I have not been able to visit it yet, but believe me, I will.
I am very happy that the "Alumnus of the Oxford Academy" will converge on Oxford on July 28th. Although I am not Alumni of Oxford, my wife and four children were, and every one of them were proud of their school. To The Alumni, Good Luck, and I hope for you, a big turnout.
Comes time to once again say so long for now, so please remember, as down the path of life you travel, take time to smell the flowers. TOT.
