Lower Pet Population;
It’s a SNAP, With Mums!
NORWICH – It’s time again for the 4th Annual CCSPCA SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program) Fall Mum Sale, available now thru Sept. 29th. The SNAP slogan is, “Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem! Spay and neuter all pets.”
You can help to solve the overpopulation situation of cats and dogs in Chenango County by buying beautiful mum plants at Pires Flower Basket in Norwich or Gallery Three-Two-One in Oxford. The fund raiser, which began August 25th, is just in time for fall decorating.
These hardy chrysanthemum bloomers are in 8” pots and come in a myriad of great fall colors like yellow, bronze, orange, and burgundy. (They come in every color but blue!) There is no guarantee they will come up every year, but they will hold their blossoms for weeks! Mums are just $5 per plant, and best of all, all proceeds will benefit SNAP.
All money raised from the annual mum sale will assist in the cost for the spay/neuters of hundreds of pets in Chenango County. Over 700 dogs/cats have already benefited from SNAP since its inception in May, 2003.
The lesson is a “snap” to learn: the more animals that are spayed/neutered, the less that come into the shelter. There are so many wonderful puppies/dogs at the shelter that need good homes. Of those brought into the CCSPCA, thirty percent are purebreds. There are backyard dog breeders, some even in Oxford, who are breeding dogs for money, increasing the population (-especially labs). Hopefully this new offspring will get spayed/neutered before they reproduce. If the public continues to support these breeders, the number of homeless animals in Chenango County will rise, and thus more will come into the shelter.
Each year approximately 3-4 million homeless cats and dogs are killed in shelters. That's one every 6 1/2 seconds. Although many of these animals are healthy and adoptable, the sheer number outweighs the availability of good homes. CCSPCA SNAP and many other organizations have made great strides in overcoming this tragedy. The objective is simple; to encourage every humane American to take responsibility for having their cat and dog spayed or neutered. Statistics have shown that it is sterilization, not euthanasia, that works at controlling the overpopulation of cats/dogs. Ninety percent of the animals brought into the CCSPCA are not spayed/neutered.
Mum plants are available at either location: Pires Flower Basket, open Mon – Fri, 8 to 5 and Sat 10 to 2 PM, located on Rt. 12, in Norwich; or at Gallery Three-Two-One located at 41 State Street in Oxford, open Tues - Sun, 11 to 5.
SNAP is a 501(c)3 charitable organization through the CCSPCA. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent the law allows. For More Information: contact Diane Troxell, CCSPCA SNAP Coordinator, 843-9538.:D
