FIRE PREVENTION WEEK--
“Practice your escape plan!”

The National Fire Prevention Association’s 2007 “Fire Prevention Week” will wrap up Saturday.
Chenango County Fire Bureau representative Mike Beckwith wants to remind parents and children to review the information they’ve learned in schools and clinics throughout the week.
“It gives parents a good opportunity to have some one-on-one time with kids,” Beckwith said. “And it will reinforce everything they’ve learned this week, which hopefully families carry throughout the year.”
The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Practice your escape plan!”

Beckwith offered several keys to practicing fire safety:

Develop a fire escape plan that identifies two ways out of each room and a family meeting place outside.
Make sure your plan allows for any specific needs in your household. Practice the plan twice a year. If everyone knows what to do, everyone can get out quickly.
When you set your clocks back (Nov. 4), change the battery in your smoke alarm.
People who burn wood can prevent chimney fires by having their chimney and stove pipes checked for creosote build up, and have them cleaned by a professional.
Have your furnace or boiler checked by a professional prior to the home heating season to ensure that they’re working properly. This could prevent a number of different fire hazards. Additional fire open houses and fire prevention clinics will be held Saturday at the following locations:
• Pharsalia – 5 p.m. Saturday. Dinner provided.
• Plymouth – 1 p.m. Saturday.
