New Children’s Shriners Book
Donated to Oxford Library

On behalf of the local fraternity of Shriners, Oxford resident and past Shriners Potentate, Steve Behe recently donated the new children’s book, “Granny Uncovers Miracles at Shriners Hospitals for Children”, to the Oxford Memorial Library. The important good that Shriners Hospitals do for children and the message of research stressed in the book is something that Steve would like to share with his community.
“Granny Uncovers Miracles…” was written by Lou Brinegar but was conceived by the Shriners’ “First Lady” Helen Coe Lemieux. First Lady Helen was the wife of Bernard J. Lemieux, M.D., the Imperial Potentate of Shriners of North America. Sadly, she passed away this January 1st, but the benefits of this fund raising book are a legacy that will aid many children in the future. The book is geared to helping people understand that “Yesterday’s research is today’s patient care. Today’s research is tomorrow’s cure”. Proceeds from sales will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children research.
Steve Behe feels very strongly about the benefits of this book and has not only purchased a copy for the Oxford library, but he has also bought one to donate to the Oxford Academy Primary school, and has gotten one for the kid’s room at his Behe Funeral Home.
There are 22 pediatric specialty Shriners hospitals located throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. They provide specialized care for orthopaedic conditions (including brittle bone disease, spina bifida and cerebral palsy), burns (including reconstructive and restorative surgeries), spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate. They also conduct innovative research and provide world-class teaching programs for physicians and other health care professionals. All services for children are provided at no charge. Last year, $825 million was spent to operate these hospitals which translate to $26 per second of free care. Eligibility for child care is not based on financial need or relationship to a Shriner.

This past year, Steve has been the Potentate of the Kalurah Shriners of Endicott. The philanthropic work that he’s done with them includes a lot of volunteer driving. The Kalurah Shriners, which has many Chenango County members, has two vans, and they take care of transporting young patients from this area to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Erie/Philadelphia, PA and Boston/Springfield, MA, depending on their needs. In 2007, he and other area members drove a total of 21,000 miles!

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of, “Granny Uncovers Miracles at Shriners Hospitals for Children”, for yourself or for your local library, contact Steve Behe at (607) 843-6888 or any member of the Kalurah Shriners.
If you know of a child that could benefit from the specialized services of a Shriners Hospital or you would like to make a gift to the Shriners, contact a local Shriner or visit www.shrinershospitals.org (http://www.shrinershospitals.org/) or call 800-237-5055.
