Guilford Historical Society To Hear About
Covered Bridges at Next Meeting
By Wilma Felton-Gray
Fans of covered bridges and local history take note: The Guilford Historical Society will welcome two authorities on New York State’s Covered Bridges at the GHS social on Saturday, Feb. 9th beginning at noon with speakers at 1 PM at the Guilford Methodist Church in Guilford.
“Spanning New York State” will be the topic of the program offered by Bob and Trish Kane members of numerous covered bridge organizations across the United States. Their presentation is an armchair power point tour of 33 of the state’s existing historic covered bridges. All are welcome to this free event, including the luncheon and socializing at noon.
The Kane’s have been actively pursuing Covered Bridges and educating the public in regards to their preservation since 1993. Even with full time jobs and four grandchildren, the Kane’s find time to travel and work on covered bridge projects. Bob enjoys studying the actual structures and the various truss combinations of the bridges. Trish enjoys the research aspect of this hobby as well as photographing them. Her photography has been featured in Pennsylvania Magazine, the I Love New York State Autumn Tourism Guide as well as several calendars.
Currently, they are assisting the Oxford Town Historian (Charlotte Stafford) on a book about Theodore Burr, famous bridge builder whose former home (now the Oxford Memorial Library) is located in Oxford.
In 2002, the Kane’s spear-headed the DeLorme Atlas Project where Covered Bridge Enthusiasts across the country joined them in submitting maps and directions to covered bridges to DeLorme for inclusion in future Atlases. They are co-founders of a project titled Covered Spans of Yesteryear. Once completed, this endeavor will document all past covered bridges known to have existed in the United States and Canada.
The couple is also currently working on a driving tour of New York’s covered bridges. For more information (www.lostbridges.org (http://www.lostbridges.org)).
Following the presentation, the Kane’s will have covered bridge information and memorabilia available to the public.
The GHS will feature displays on the Hamlets of Guilford. There will be photos of homes and businesses past and present along with some of the societies recent acquisitions. One of which will feature Civil War memorabilia of a shotgun and powder horn donated by Hobert and Beverly Gridley.
Also the latest publications will be available for purchase. Join us at noon for a free lunch and socializing with the presentation to begin at 1 p.m. at the Guilford United Methodist Church on Cty Rt 35 in Guilford.
