Habitat Has a New Partnering Family in Greene

GREENE – At the end of last year, Chenango County Habitat for Humanity (CCHH) chose its fourth house site selection at the corner of Mill and Monell Streets. The next step was taken by the Family Selection Committee. They have the delicate task of choosing future CCHH homeowners from a pool of applicants. After deliberation, the Committee has announced that the next partnering family will be the Dunlaps.

Christine and Larry Dunlap and their two children, aged seven and nine, live in Greene. Chris stays at home and takes care of the kids, who both have special needs, due to autism. Larry supports his family by working for the Pepsi Company. They have always wanted to own their own home, but each year unfortunate circumstances have gotten in their way.

Ten years ago, when married for only four months, Christine was in a car accident. She was seriously hurt, with injuries that have led to many surgeries on her leg. Eventually the situation worsened and two years ago she lost the leg.

Still Christine is so upbeat saying, “I do the best I can and just keep going!" Larry is Chris’ solid support and together they deal with problems as they come, and don’t let things get them down.

This undaunting spirit caught the eye of a couple of staff members in the school district who consider Chris an idol because of all she has been through. Two years ago, they wrote a letter of introduction for the Dunlaps to Chenango County Habitat for Humanity, and explained why they felt the family was so deserving of a home. Now after waiting and hoping, the Dunlap family is going to get a house of their very own, built to suit their individual needs.

As is their motto, Habitat for Humanity offers “a hand up, not a handout”. It is the policy of Habitat to have partnering families actively involved in various aspects of the construction, fund raising, and related areas. The Dunlaps are prepared to invest 350 hours of “sweat equity”, which serves as a down payment. When the home is turned over to them, they will pay back Habitat's expenses on a long-term, low-interest mortgage suited to their income. Larry has already changed his work schedule so he will be available on weekends when construction begins and Chris is ready to make her special chocolate chip cookies to give all the volunteers energy. Congratulations Dunlap family!
