CHENANGO COUNTY COUNCIL OF THE ARTS ANNOUNCES SPRING CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES
The Chenango County Council of the Arts in Norwich will present a mini-series of three chamber music performances in March and April.
On Sunday, March 16, French cellist Florent Renard-Payen will present a solo performance entitled Bach and Beyond. The program will feature a selection of Préludes from the Suite for solo cello by J.S Bach, and recent pieces written by American composers.
Florent Renard-Payen was born in Paris to a family of professional musicians;
his parents were both harpists. At the age of twenty, he moved to BostonBoston University in 1996. He completed his musical studies in 2004, earning a Doctor of Musical Arts in Cello Performance from the Eastman School of Music. A champion of music of the 20th and 21st centuries, Florent is the founder of the Tarab Cello Ensemble, a group dedicated to contemporary repertoire for cello ensemble, and a guest performer of the Society for New Music in Syracuse. He has recorded chamber works by David Liptak, Dan Trueman, and Larry Bell on Bridge Records and Albany Records labels. Since 1999, Florent has been teaching cello at Colgate University and chamber music at Hamilton College, NY. to pursue five years of graduate study with artist cellist Andrés Díaz, culminating in a Master’s degree and the Pi Kappa Lambda award for musical achievement from
On Sunday, March 30, The Colgate Chamber Players of Hamilton, NY, directed by Professor of Music Laura Klugherz, will perform "Baroque and Beyond", a program of music for small ensembles of strings, winds and piano. The concert will also include works by Mozart, Haydn, Sammartini and Joaquin Turina and a special performance of the Colgate cello choir.
The Chamber Players, now in their 20th season, are a select group of advanced players representing many disciplines across the campus. CP alums have gone on to pursue
advanced degrees in music, and have also become Hollywood composers, doctors,
lawyers, traders, graphic artists and designers, and educators. The long afternoon hours of rehearsal have been punctuated by a varied series in and around campus, tours in New York City and Mexico, and a special musical retreat in Chile. In January several Chamber Players participated in a concert tour of central Mexico as part of a Liberal Arts Core Mexico extended study. Selected Chamber Players have been interns at the Chenango Summer MusicFest, learning intensive chamber music rehearsal skills, festival organization, public relations, and time management. Professor of Music Laura Klugherz has been the motivating force behind the Colgate Chamber Players since 1988.
The final performance will be held on Sunday April 13 and features Paul Sweeney and Tom Rasely from The Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York. Sweeney, a guitar instructor at BCC, Binghamton, will play selections by Bach (including guitar transcriptions from the Violin Partita, BMW 1001); also pieces by Tarrega (Recuerdos). Tom Rasely, private guitar instructor and recording artist, will play original arrangements of popular classical pieces by Bach, Brahms, Hassler, Sibelius, and Pachelbel.
Paul Sweeney is the President, and founder of the Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York. Tom Rasely began playing the guitar in 1964 and comes from a musical family. He studied music at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY and received a Bachelor of Music Education from SUNY Fredonia ('73). He is a performer, teacher and arranger, and has appeared on over 45 recording projects. Tom has also performed as guest artist with several upstate New York symphony orchestras and twice at The White House. He is the founder/director of the Norwich Guitar School, and is a moderator on the Guitarnotes.com discussion forum.
All performances begin at 2 pm and will conclude by 3:30. General admission is $10 and
