Free Weekend Concerts in LaFayette Park

In honor of the Village of Oxford Bicentennial Celebration, 6 On The Square (6OTS) is proud to present two free concerts of historic songs with regional themes to be held in LaFayette Park, in Oxford. On Saturday, July 19th, will be The Dady Brothers at 7 PM. On Sunday, July 20th, Joe Crookston and the Red Roosters will perform at 3 PM.
On Saturday evening, starting off the Bicentennial Week, John and Joe Dady, “The Dady Brothers”, will be performing, “Songs From the Canals”.

Not everyone is aware of the presence of the historic Chenango Canal (1837-1878), but it was an engineering marvel for its time and our area’s earliest mass transportation artery. It was actually back in 1824, during the construction of the Erie Canal, that the Chenango Canal was proposed. The backbreaking task of excavation was largely done by Irish immigrant laborers, using picks and shovels. Looking right out from LaFayette Park, where the Dady Brothers will perform, onto Route 12, you will be looking at the filled in space where the Canal once flowed and where packet boats and barges were drawn by horse and mule teams on the towpath. It is this imagery of labor and love that John and Joe will recall in songs which are an expression of the American music landscape. The Dady Brothers' unique style and instrumental versatility captures the essence of the traditional Irish tunes that were adapted by the canalers. Of course, this duo will intersperse their favorite originals, and songs from a long ago era updated for our times, throughout the evening. Accompanied by an array of instruments this will be a fun night the whole family will enjoy.

On Sunday afternoon, Joe Crookston and the Red Roosters will perform at 3 PM. Joe Crookston is joined by Doug Robinson and Molly MacMillan (AKA “the Red Roosters”) for their afternoon performance on the Square.
Joe Crookston, chosen as a 2008 Most-Wanted Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, continues to take his songwriting and musical skills to new levels. After receiving a year-long grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, Joe Crookston set off traveling the rural hills of New York State in search of stories...stories that became songs. Songs about: an escaped slave named John Jones, a conversation between "Dina", a Polish immigrant and her 4-year-old daughter, and a rollicking number about a drunken red rooster eating mash from a whiskey still during prohibition...true stories.
Accompanying Joe will be Molly MacMillan, a well known Jazz pianist, vocalist and composer. She has been a long-time member of the Central New York music scene, performing with various ensembles and with her Jazz Trio, which features Doug Robinson on upright bass. Doug Robinson, the other member of “the Red Roosters”, has had a diverse career of touring and session work. For 30 years he has been a vocalist, bassist and guitarist with many world music, folk, country, pop, jazz and blues artists.
Joe Crookston and the Red Roosters will be featuring many of Joe’s New York songs, which relate tales of our history and our remarkable intergenerational, universal, and timeless connections. Don’t miss this excellent, insightful concert!
These performances were made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Chenango County Council of the Arts. Visit www.6onthesquare.org (http://www.6onthesquare.org/) for more information or call (607) 843-OTS6 (6876).
