Concerts in LaFayette Park

OXFORD – On July 10th, the community was treated to two wonderful concerts in LaFayette Park. First was the Oxford Community Band. They performed at 6 PM. We Are Mighty Lester began at 7 PM at the opposite end of the park.

A larger than usual crowd gathered in LaFayette Park for the Oxford Community Band’s second concert of the season. Under the direction of Francis Wilcox and Justin Hubman, the group (of approximately thirty members, ranging in age from school students to senior citizens), play moderate grade marches, show tunes and novelty selections for the enjoyment of the Oxford community. One of the sound technicians from the Mighty Lester band even joined the Community Band playing the tuba.

The Community Band's Summer Concert Series will continue each Thursday until August 7th. Their last two concerts on 7/31 & 8/7 will be a half hour earlier. The first one will be in Washington Park (across from the Bida Home) and the other at the Oxford Historical Society’s Depot-Museum, for their annual Ice Cream Social, at 7:00 PM. (An additional concert may be added at the NYS Veterans’ Home. Watch the OxfordNY.com calendar for details.)
Also, don’t miss seeing the Oxford Community Band in the Bicentennial Parade July 26th at 10 AM.

Virtually everybody stayed for the We Are Mighty Lester concert (simply by turning their chairs around). Mighty Lester is an eight-piece R&B, soul, and blues band from Raleigh, NC. Formed in 2001, they have steadily built a following and earned industry acclaim with their blistering live shows. In addition to winning “Best Self Produced CD”, Mighty Lester took Third Place in the 2007 International Blues Challenge held in Memphis, TN, “The Birthplace of the Blues.” In a short time, their big brass sound drew more passers-by. On into the show, more visitors arrived to swell the crowd even more until LaFayette Park was jammed with music loving people. It was a very successful night!

This show was held in collaboration with 6 On The Square (6OTS). Sponsored by Rentals to Go. This project was also made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Chenango County Council of the Arts.
