Great Weekend of Historic Concerts from 6OTS!

In honor of the Village of Oxford Bicentennial Celebration, 6 On The Square (6OTS) presented two free concerts of historic songs with regional themes, both intended to be held in LaFayette Park this past weekend. On Saturday, July 19th, were The Dady Brothers and on Sunday, July 20th, Joe Crookston and the Red Roosters.

On Saturday evening, starting off the Bicentennial Week, well over 250 people crowded into LaFayette Park to see John and Joe Dady, “The Dady Brothers”, performance of, “Songs From the Canals”. Of course, this duo interspersed their favorite originals, and songs from a long ago era updated for our times. These talented brothers’ unique style and instrumental versatility captured the essence of the traditional Irish tunes that were adapted by the canalers. The throngs of community members clapped and cheered.

On Sunday afternoon, Joe Crookston and the Red Roosters performed. They were supposed to be in the Park, but the tentative inclement weather conditions brought them into the safety of 6 On The Square (6OTS). Joe Crookston was accompanied by Doug Robinson on bass and Molly MacMillan on piano (AKA “the Red Roosters”) for this performance, an addition that created a rich warm sound.

Joe Crookston’s songwriting was inspired after receiving a year-long grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, to travel the rural hills of New York State in search of stories...stories that became songs. The Oxford audience was charged and charmed by the energetic lyrics singing and swaying along.

These two wonderful performances were made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Chenango County Council of the Arts. Visit www.6onthesquare.org (http://www.6onthesquare.org/) for future event information or call (607) 843-OTS6 (6876).
