Oxford Village's
Arbor Day Celebration - Saturday
OXFORD - The Oxford Village Tree Board is presenting its annual Arbor Day Celebration, Saturday, April 25th, at 9 AM, in the LaFayette Park band shell. There will be an award presentation with Oxford's Mayor and a tree give-away as part of "Tree City USA" and the Arbor Day Celebration.
At 9 AM, there will be an awards and flag presentation with the Oxford Village Tree Board; the honorable Oxford Village Mayor, Terry M. Stark; and the DEC Senior Forester of Sherburne, Greg Owens. Following that, hundreds of Douglas fir and Norway spruce evergreen seedling trees (wrapped by Oxford Academy High School volunteers), will be given away by Tree Board members as part of "Tree City USA" and the Arbor Day Celebration. (Trees are often gone in minutes- so plan to come early.) In addition, expert tree advice will be offered by Board member and Agriculture Instructor, Dale Johnson.
A sound system in the bandstand, generously provided by Oxford Lion, DJ Jim Baldwin, will ensure that everyone will hear the ceremony and announcement of Oxford’s 5th grade winners of the 2009 Arbor Day poster contest. Art students of Charity Gipp, will be asked to come up and receive their awards. The students, accompanied by their school principal Kathleen Hansen, are planning to read a lovely poem to the crowd along with quotes from famous people about trees. The Arbor Day posters will be on exhibit at “6 On The Square”, the art center located at 6 LaFayette Park. Hours for the exhibit are 9 – 10:30 AM.
Oxford has been named a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation since 1994, honoring its commitment to its community forest. In 2005 & 2007, Oxford was also the proud recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program.
