Quilt Raffle, Benefit for Oxford Food Pantry

When Joyce Ardron saw an unfinished set of cross-stitched pillow shams and an un-started matching comforter at the Common Cents Thrift Shop, a light bulb must have gone off in her head! She contacted her daughter-in-law, Darlene Ardron, a noted embroiderer, who was very interested in the set. Darlene didn’t want to just complete the stitchery and quilting for herself, she thought since proceeds from sales at the “Common Cents” shop ordinarily benefit the Oxford Food Pantry (OFP), it would make a great item for a raffle to benefit the OFP. That’s how the project got started.

“Common Cents” (located downstairs in the Oxford Methodist Church) carries clothing and shoes, and many gently used (donated) items such as dishes, games, toys, and more. Bedding items like this unique cross-stitch set don’t come along every day, but on this day it got into good hands. Darlene got started and worked many, many hours embroidering the cross-stitched roses and ribbons. Then she added batting and a backing fabric and, with tiny stitches, hand-quilted the Queen sized bed spread.

Hundreds of raffle tickets were sold and the winner was…Joan Leonard of NBT Bank! Joan was thrilled and vowed that this hand embroidered bed set will become a family heirloom. The proceeds of the raffle, $300 raised, went to the Oxford Food Pantry.

The OFP, operates out of the United Church of Oxford on Fort Hill. It’s there for Oxford residents who have food emergencies and is available through local church referrals.
