Morrisville State College to Host Northeast Dairy Challenge at Follett Hall
NORWICH, NY - Morrisville State College’s Norwich Campus Dean, Dr. Ted Nichols, announced recently that the Norwich Campus will host the Third annual Northeast Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge at Roger W. Follett Hall, October 20-22, 2005.
The Northeast Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge brings together 120 northeast college students from 14 universities who are studying for a career in the agriculture industry. Working in five-member, multi-university teams, students build teamwork skills in a real-world environment. The event inspires students to expand their knowledge and empowers them with resources for success. The challenge incorporates all facets of a working dairy business in a forum that is interactive, educational and fun. The Northeast Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge provides a unique opportunity for tomorrow’s dairy leaders and is guided and supported by the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge.
Day one begins with each team receiving information about a real-life dairy, including production and farm management data. Following an operation evaluation, teams develop a comprehensive program including recommendations for nutrition, reproduction, milking procedures, animal health, housing and financial management. The first day concludes with an informal dinner attended by sponsors, students and advisers.
Day two is presentation day, where team members present recommendations to a panel of judges. Knowledge is tested, and team members must field questions from the judges. Presentations are evaluated based on the analysis and recommendations. The evening concludes with a reception and awards banquet.
Three area host farms, Indian Camp Farms owned by David, Karole and Andrew Kross, of Sherburne; Balsam View Farms owned by Harold, Donna, Heidi and Brian Newton, of Pharsalia; and Maple Hill Farms owned by Andy and Maureen Bartlett of Pharsalia; will share their farm’s herd health, financial and other management records with the students, college faculty and industry representatives. Marshman Farms, of Oxford, will serve as the back-up farm.
“The Dairy Challenge is a great opportunity to bring all aspects of the dairy industry together,” said John Lehr, a consultant for First Pioneer Farm Credit and a member of the 2005 Host Farm Selection Committee.
“In addition to the Dairy Challenge itself, students and industry events are being planned at several area facilities including the new Roger W. Follet Hall, Northeast Classic Car Museum, the Norwich YMCA, the Howard Johnson Hotel and at Marshman Farms. As a result of superior area facilities, Chenango County’s reputation as a leading dairy county, and the help of Daniel Williamson at the Howard Johnson Hotel, Morrisville State College is able to host this year’s event,” said Sheila Marshman, 2005 Host Superintendent and assistant professor of agricultural business at Morrisville State College.
The Northeast Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge is made possible through the support of industry sponsors including: The Agway Foundation, Ag Enhancement Program of NE Farm Credit, The Northeast Dairy Producers, AgChoice Farm Credit ACA, Agri-Mark Inc., Blue Seal Feeds, Cargill Animal Nutrition, Eastern States Exposition, Genex Cooperative Inc, MidAtlantic Farm Credit ACA, Northeast Agricultural Alliances, Poulin Grain, Select Sire Power, Yankee Farm Credit ACA, ABS Global, Accelerated Genetics, Bourdeau Brothers, Diamond V Mills, I.L.
