RIT Enrolls and Awards Academic
Scholarship to John Petersen

OXFORD - John Petersen, son of Roy and Jeanie Petersen of Oxford, was recently accepted for enrollment for fall 2011 admission into the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to major in Software Engineering. In addition, he was selected by the Scholarship Committee to receive an RIT Achievement Scholarship of $6,000 per academic year, based on his outstanding academic achievements. RIT is internationally recognized for academic leadership in computing, engineering, imaging technology, sustainability, and fine and applied arts. John is a transfer student coming from the Norwich Campus of Morrisville State College.

Petersen graduated in the Oxford Academy High School Class of 2009, a year early, with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors and both scientific and Spanish endorsement. He ranked eighth in his class, and received a (second) Presidential Award for Academic Excellency.

Right after high school, John became a Rotary Youth Exchange student, living in Budapest, Hungary for ten months, going to school and experiencing the local culture. He became fluent in conversational Hungarian (Magyar). He also had the honor of attending a one-on-one math course with a professor at ELTE, the largest college of science and mathematics in the country.

Upon returning to the States, John attended SUNY Morrisville - Norwich Campus for an academic year. Morrisville also arranged for him to take Calculus I online through a consortium agreement at Hudson Valley Community College. With a GPA of 3.94, John made the Dean’s List and President’s List for the fall 2010 and the spring 2011 semesters. Also recognizing his academic achievement, John was inducted in the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and was nominated for Student of the Year. He made several friends at Morrisville and enjoyed the convenient location.

Engineering, fluid dynamics, robotics, programming, and mathematics are of particular interest to John. These elements seem to point at aerospace engineering which may be the direction his future educational plans may take. After touring the inspirational Department of Mechanical Engineering at RIT, John didn’t want to leave. It had everything he was looking for. RIT offers a vibrant and dynamic environment with their creative and innovative community. John is elated to be accepted to RIT and looks forward to starting in the fall.

In addition to RIT’s academic leadership, it has unparalleled support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. They enroll 17,000 full- and part-time students in more than 200 career-oriented and professional programs, and its cooperative education program is one of the oldest and largest in the nation.
