Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival 2005 To Hold
4th Annual Performance Poetry Competition
Tomorrow: Saturday, September 10, 2005, Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival will hold a competitive performance poetry slam in which poets of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience will compete for $500.00 in cash prizes. The event, organized and hosted by Richard Bernstein, Norwich poet and teacher, will take place at the Howard Johnson's ballroom in Norwich, NY, and is sponsored through the generosity of Price Chopper Supermarkets, Meadwestvaco and OSG Norwich.
The action will begin promptly at 12:00 noon with a special 40-minute performance by the five-member State University at Oneonta poetry slam team, currently ranked 2nd in the country among college and university teams. Members of the team will also perform later in the day. Poets and spectators will also be treated to performances by several individuals who will compete at this year's National Poetry Slam in Albuquerque, NM, including Bryan Lee, winner of Colorscape's 2004 poetry slam.
The competition will feature two divisions: a youth division for poets 10 to 18 years of age; and an open division for poets over 18. Contestants are judged on the quality of their poetry as well as the quality of their performance.
Contestants should prepare to read their original work in two 3-1/2 minute rounds, with the second round for finalists only. Poets will be penalized for going over 3-1/2 minutes. Scoring is open and immediate. The youth division allows no more than two poems per round, while the adult division permits only one poem in each round. Poets should not repeat poems. Neither musical accompaniment nor props are allowed.
This event is free and open to the public. There is no entry fee. To register, call 607-334-2422.
Last year, more than 40 poets, from 14 to 90 years of age, participated in Colorscape Chenango's 3rd Performance Poetry Competition. Performance poetry continues to grow in popularity across the country and is a common occurrence on college campuses and in coffeehouses. Additionally, performance poetry airs regularly on HBO and is celebrated on Broadway. Come see what it's all about at Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival 2005.
