Historical Museums

The following are a list of Museums that contain the historical roots of Chenango County.  Visit each one to see the exciting artifacts they have collected from the area and learn about the past.

Chenango County Historical Museum
45 Rexford Street,   Norwich, NY 
Experience the life and handicrafts of the counties early settlers.  Exhibits of past and present industries from all corners of Chenango County. Indian artifacts and history of early railroads and the Chenango Canal.  Three floors of exhibits including an antique balloon basket, hair wreaths, toys, a real oxcart, farm and home gadgets, a Civil War officer's desk, a life size horse, etc... And outside displays. 
Open year round.
Hours: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday  1:00PM to 4:00PM.
Research Facility: Monday thru Friday from 9AM to Noon and 1:00PM to 5:00PM.

Afton Museum
Afton, NY
The Afton Museum contains a house and a barn filled with exhibits.  Inside the house, history unfolds as you pass through each themed room.  In the barn are more exhibits on milking, laundry and tools.  Inside there is a doll room, military room and Indian room, just to name a few.   There are artifacts from Afton families, including an original collection from the Civil War in the military room, as well as an old fashioned tread mill and small farm equipment.  There is also a mantle piece from the Joseph Smith Mormon House. 
Open by appointment for individuals and groups. Admission is Free.  Open 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sundays or call for group tour: (607) 639-1625.

Greene Museum
Moore Memorial Library

Collection includes Indian Artifacts, World War I items, and Greene Historical items.   Open 2nd Saturday of every month, year round, and by appointment.  There is no admission charge.
Unadilla Valley Historical Museum/Mt Upton Historical Society

The Museum sits on the south end of town in the old railroad depot.  Summer hours: Sunday 2-4PM and by appointment.  Contact Jane Winchester at (607) 764-8375

Norwich Pharmacal Co. Museum
Eaton Center, 19 Eaton Avenue
Norwich, NY  13815
View tablet filling machine and a tube filling machine along with scientific instruments, laboratory glassware.  On display also are products manufactured by the Norwich Pharmacal Company since the company's inception in 1885.  Many photographs highlighting important contributors and events in the history of the company, old stock certificates, price lists, and much more.

Winter Hours (Nov. thru April) 1 to 4PM Wednesdays or by appointment.

 Northeast Classic Car Museum
NYS Route 23-24 Rexford Street,
Norwich, NY
The largest collection of Franklin luxury cars in the world, plus many other extremely rare and unique models and manufacturers.  Fascinating examples of early technological advances and much more.  Hours: Every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.  Call for car club and group tour special arrangements.   Handicapped accessible.

Oxford Historical Society Museum
Depot Street, Oxford, NY

A small Train Depot located on Depot Street, Oxford.  The museum pertains to Oxford's history and has a vast collection of railroad memorabilia.

Plymouth Historical Society Depot
Plymouth, NY 

An old railroad station that has been restored. It is now owned by the historical society.  It's open on Plymouth Days during July 12th and 13th.  Inside there are a few small exhibits that pertain to the Railroad and Cheese.
